Ground gas protection from carbon dioxide, methane, radon and other contaminants

PAGeotechnical’s ground gas protection systems have been developed to enable developers and contractors to protect new buildings against gases contained in contaminated land. They are designed in line with current guidance :BS8485 (2015) and use products that meet this requirement.

Toxic, asphyxiating and flammable and potentially explosive ground gases can enter buildings and other structures on and below the ground. They pose potential risks to occupants and users.

With current Government directives predisposing development of Brownfield sites, it is important to understand the challenges that these can provide.

PAGeoTechnical are experienced  designers and providers of gas protection measures. We recognise that there are a number of factors requiring consideration which affect the sensitivity of a development to the effects of ground gas, and that there is a range of design solutions available for different situations. PAGeoTechnical work with quality providers of Site investigation data used in the risk assessment phase.

PAGeotechnical's approach is to determine appropriate ground gas risks that can be used to identify a range of possible design solutions for protection against the presence of ground gases on a development site, and ascertain best value solution. Our approach is not prescriptive and professional judgement is used as to the acceptability of risk.

What gases require control?

A variety of gases might be present in the ground naturally, or be present as a result of contamination, or arise from buried wastes. Ground gases of concern include methane, (which is flammable and an asphyxiant)  carbon dioxide, (which is toxic and an asphyxiant) carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, helium, neon, argon, xenon, radon, etc.). They also include volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or inorganic vapours (mercury). A number of additional trace gases can also be present.

Permanent gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide which might be present in coal measure strata can also emanate from old mine workings.

PAGeotechnical’s ground gas solutions range from geomembrane gas protection to active systems and are suitable for installations ranging from housing to industrial and commercial/retail premises.
